My name is Jim Ward, and I teach traditional Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan & Qi Gong, have been practising martial arts for 48 years and Taijiquan for 20 years.
My teacher is Bob Chidgey of Stamford Tai Chi Club, and our Sifu is Herman Chan-Pensley, whose school, Tai Ji Quan Dao (The Way of Tai Ji Quan) was established in 1987. I train with them as a member of their instructors’ group.
An introduction to the class

We are Covid-secure, are recognised as a formally organised outdoor sport, and also hold regular Online classes.
Zoom online classes available
The Oakham group meets every Tuesday and Thursday. Spaces limited so please email or ring to reserve your place. These classes are part of a local group of the Tai Ji Quan Dao school. There are classes at 10am (online), 2pm and 7.30pm on Tuesdays, and 1pm (Qi Gong only) & 2.30pm on Thursdays.
Each regular tai chi class lasts for 1½ hours and has three main sections:

- Preparatory exercises to help relax and loosen the limbs
- A standing or sitting exercise to develop fitness, awareness and concentration (called “Zhan Zhuang” or Standing Post)
- Learning the original Yang family long form, consisting of 108 flowing movements practised at a slow and relaxed pace.

- An introduction to:
- Eight preparatory exercises
- Two Qi Gong exercises
- The dragon walk
- The first eight moves of the form
- An basic understanding of the benefits to be gained from the practice of Tai Chi Chuan and Qi Gong exercises
- An appreciation of three important elements in the practice of Tai Chi Chuan:
- Relaxation
- Awareness
- Concentration
- An awareness of the movement of energy
- An idea of how your health, fitness, suppleness and stamina might improve with further training
